I try to keep the descriptions down to a paragraph or two...and usually succeed. But the artwork of this fountain has had enough twists and turns that you deserve to know how it came about. When I was a little kid, I heard a song on the radio entitled, Baubles, Bangles, Bright Shiny Beads. At the time I had no idea what a bauble was, much less a bangle. But I knew they were special...magical, and it made the song special. I started this sculpture with that song in mind. But then, in the middle of it all, it got to the point where I'd look at it and just start smiling...not out of pride, but because it was sooo over the top. Clearly this fountain was...goin' for it. When it was finished, I wanted to give it a nice name of its own and then we came up with Jewels of Barsoom...a mythical land...Mars from one of Edgar Rice Burroughs novels. It just fit perfectly. Later still, it began looking like paramecium, and one-celled animals, which was magical too and we toyed with the idea of calling it, The Beauty of Life...but only briefly. Sooo...here it is The Jewels of Barsoom. Hope you like it!
What we've done is taken panels of high-tech acrylic... they're bulletproof, almost literally, and we color, stain, paint, and patina them with metallic oxides, iridescent, luminous, and translucent paints, and sophisticated stains. We use generous amounts of a special paint that utterly duplicates the brilliance, luminosity, and depth of old-fashioned stained glass, but without the inherent problems that would exist using stained glass with water. Also, if you look closely at the front of this fountain, you'll see the addition of...texture! The "caning" on the front (the lines that separate stained glass panels) is a polymer...instead of lead, and to quote someone famous, that's a GOOD thing. That's why you don't see a lot of stained glass fountains.....until now. Lead and water...not so hot. Our fountains have the beauty of stained glass but without the lead...or the cost. Lots and lots of possibilities here! The painting is done on the backside of the acrylic panel (except for the "caning") and then sealed. The water flows down the front and consequently never comes in contact with the painted image.
The bottom of these fountains is a hand-made copper reservoir that is hand-patinaed with heat. The sound of the water is magnificent! It's really a visual show of the first degree. In all of our water fountains, a standard 110v outlet is required for the quiet, long-lasting, powerful, adjustable-flow water pump that is included. All of our water fountains are re-circulating and do not need an outside water source.
Back lighting is available on these water fountains....though the wall fountains look great without them. This is a randomly positioned string of high-tech LED lights that create the illusion of stars. Each light is literally the size of a grain of rice and they put out virtually no heat. These lights are super long life and they give the fountain an incredible depth. If you entertain at night...this one is dynamite with the backlighting!
